29 Jan 2009 - 'Assessing The Outcome of the London Conference'
The London Conference on Afghanistan was held on 28 January. The purpose of the Conference, which follows the unveiling in December 2009 of President Obama’s revised US strategy towards the conflict, was to develop wider international agreement on measures needed to advance the goal of a stable and secure Afghanistan. On Friday 29 January the outcome of the London Conference was assessed by a panel of IISS experts, convened by the Institute’s Afghanistan Security Programme.

The IISS on 3 March concluded a year of 50th anniversary celebrations with a special Gala Dinner in Washington DC, featuring a discussion on ‘Geopolitics, Strategy and the Future’ between former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, IISS President Emeritus Sir Michael Howard and Former UN Undersecretary General Shashi Tharoor.

On Wednesday, 18 February 2009, IISS Consulting Fellow Sir Michael Quinlan launched his latest book, Thinking about Nuclear Weapons: Principles, Problems, Prospects. Sir Michalel's remarks were delivered by Peter Hennessy, Attlee Professor of Contemporary British History, Queen Mary, University of London. Afterwards Professor Sir Michael Howard, President-Emeritus, IISS and Mary Kaldor, Professor of Global Governance, LSE particpated in a panel discussion.
11 Feb 09 - Video-Link Roundtable - 20th anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan
On Wendesday 11 February Russian News Agency RIA Novosti in cooperation with the International Institute of Strategic Studies held an expert video-link roundtable between Moscow and London on the topic of “20th anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan and its lessons for the current NATO operations” at RIA Novosti’s office in London. Afterwards Professor Sir Michael Howard, President-Emeritus, IISS and Mary Kaldor, Professor of Global Governance, LSE particpated in a panel discussion.
