The Hon. Gareth Evans, Co-chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND) presents the recently released Commission report 'Eliminating Nuclear Threats: A Practical Agenda for Global Policymakers'


On Thursday 4 February 2010 The Hon. Gareth Evans, Co-chair ofthe International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND) will present the recently released Commission report 'Eliminating Nuclear Threats: A Practical Agenda for Global Policymakers' from 1-2pm.

 

In addition to his ICNND role, Professor Evans is Chancellor of the Australian National University, Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne, President Emeritus of the International Crisis Group, and a former Foreign Minister of Australia (1988-96). He initiated the Canberra Commission (1996) and was a member of the UN High-level Panel (2004), Blix Commission (2006) and Zedillo Commission on the IAEA (2008).

 

The International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament is a joint initiative of the Australian and Japanese Governments. It aims to reinvigorate international efforts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, in the context of both the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, and beyond.

 

Proposed by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in June 2008, the Commission is co-chaired by Professor Evans and former Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi.  The 15 commissioners include Baroness Shirley Williams, an adviser to Prime Minister Gordon Brown on nuclear proliferation issues and François Heisbourg, Chairman of the IISS.  
 

The discussion will be held in the Lee Kuan Yew Conference Room at Arundel House, 13–15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX. It will be moderated by Mark Fitzpatrick, Senior Fellow for Non-porliferation.
