In February, Dr Gary Samore took up his duties to coordinate US government-wide efforts to combat weapons of mass destruction proliferation. As “Nonproliferation Czar,” Samore is a member of the National Security Council staff and his portfolio includes everything from nuclear and conventional arms control to threat reduction to nuclear terrorism.
Samore formerly served as the National Security Council's senior director under President Clinton from 1996 to 2000, and before then at the Department of State in a variety of positions involving non-proliferation policy. Prior to his current position, he was Vice President and Director of Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York from 2006. From 2005 to 2006 he was Vice President of the Program on Global Security and Sustainability at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, prior to which he was the Director of Studies and a Senior Fellow for Non-Proliferation at IISS from 2001 to 2005. He earned his MA and PhD, both in government, from Harvard University.
