Discussion Meetings

The Institute holds 20-25 Discussion Meetings a year for its members at its London headquarters, at which guest speakers introduce a discussion on an issue of current concern. IISS members can view details of Discussion Meetings via the events calendar.


The IISS also runs seminars and small conferences in the UK and abroad on specific subjects, including study groups and workshops on its current research. Participants at these international seminars are usually a combination of government officials, academics, independent analysts, specialist journalists and business people

  • 11 Nov 08 - Address - John Hutton Right Hon John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Defence, speaks on 'Afghanistan - Worth the Sacrifice'On Tuesday 11th November 2008 Rt. Hon John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Defence, addressed the IISS on 'Afghanistan – worth the Sacrifice' from 1:30-2:30pm. Mr Hutton was giving his maiden speech as Secretary of State for Defence and choseto address the issue of Afghanistan. With the election of a new US President and national elections in Afghanistan during 2009, the next 12 months will be a critical time for the mission in Afghanistan.
