Executive Director IISS-US

 

Main responsibilities:  Adam Ward is the Executive Director of The International Institute for Strategic Studies – US, based in Washington DC. He is a member of the Directing Staff of the IISS in London.

 

Adam Ward has since February 2006 represented the IISS in the United States. There, he has particular responsibility for:

  • Development of relationships with government agencies and the wider diplomatic community.  
  • Development of relationships in the corporate and philanthropic sectors.

  • Direction of events and research that promote IISS activities, publications and initiatives.

  • Development of the Corporate and Individual Membership base of the IISS in the US.

Adam Ward was previously based at IISS headquarters in London, where he from 2001 held the position of Editor of Strategic Comments, the Institute’s monthly series of topical briefing papers on global political-military affairs. 

 

He was simultaneously the IISS Senior Fellow for East Asian Security, with programmatic and analytical responsibility for China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan and American and European policy towards East Asia and the Pacific. He writes for IISS publications such as Survival and Strategic Survey, and was involved in the production of the IISS Strategic Dossier North Korea's Weapons Programmes: A Net Assessment, published in January 2004.  He is regularly a speaker at events in North America, Asia and Europe. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Centre for China Policy Analysis, Graduate School of International Studies, Geneva.

 

Background:   Prior to joining the IISS, Adam Ward was Asia-Pacific Editor and Analyst at Oxford Analytica, a consulting firm with ties to Oxford University that provides assessments of global political risk, macroeconomic trends and financial and regulatory developments. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in German and politics and international relations from the University of Warwick, and also studied for one academic year at the University of Salzburg in Austria.
